NRW Bus Driver Receives Scholarship to Become School Bus Driver Instructor
The North Rose-Wolcott Transportation Department recognizes NRW bus driver Lisa Knorr for recently being awarded one of three scholarships from the Wayne-Finger Lakes School Bus Driver Instructors Association to become a School Bus Driver Instructor!
The $875 scholarship will cover the cost of the week-long training course and will make Knorr the second SBDI on staff at NRW alongside Transportation Director Jeremy Barnes, allowing her to administer required tests and teach required training and refresher courses for bus drivers.
Knorr, who has been a school bus driver since 2001 and at NRW since 2012, has wanted to become an SBDI for many years. Barnes encouraged her to apply for the scholarship, which required an extensive application and interview process.
“Lisa is very safety-driven, very safety-oriented,” Barnes said. “She has stepped up to train new drivers and has expressed an interest in teaching.”
In addition to the five-day training program, Knorr will prepare by taking a Point and Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) course and do some reading related to the class material. She must complete a final project and presentation as part of the class before receiving her SBDI certification. It’s quite an undertaking, but Knorr is looking forward to learning new things and being able to share her knowledge with others.
“I like to learn all the time,” Knorr said. “I tell the students every day, make sure you learn something new.”
