Students Shine at NRW Spelling Bee

After eight intense rounds of competition, a fourth grader at North Rose-Wolcott Elementary claimed the top spot at the fourth annual NRW Spelling Bee!

Mabel Cahoon outlasted eight other contestants at the February 9 event and won by correctly spelling the word "grimace." She's earned a nomination to represent NRW at the Wayne-Finger Lakes Regional Spelling Bee next month.

Fifth grader Jason Chapin was the runner up and will serve as an alternate should Mabel not be able to attend the regional bee on March 21. The winner of the regional bee will go on to represent the Wayne-Finger Lakes region at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Students in fourth through eighth grades were invited to participate and put their spelling skills to the test. Each participant received a list of words to study in advance.

Spelling bee participation builds not only spelling skills, but public speaking and confidence as well. We applaud everyone who participated for showing great courage and effort during the event!
