Six Inducted Into NRW Athletic Hall of Fame

The North Rose-Wolcott Athletic Hall of Fame inducted six new members during an April 11 ceremony at NRW High School.

The NRW Athletic Hall of Fame was established to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of outstanding athletes, coaches, administrators and Cougar supporters and to enhance current student athletes’ understanding and appreciation for the positive role models in the tradition of Cougar Athletics. Through nomination and committee selection, the Hall of Fame recognizes athletes who have been graduated from NRW a minimum of 10 years; individuals who have made significant contributions to NRW athletic programs as a coach; or individuals who have made a significant impact on district, sectional, regional, state, national, professional or international athletics.

The 2026 honorees include:

  • Brenda Ball Zeborowski, Class of 1970: Brenda was a true pioneer in women’s sports at North Rose-Wolcott. During her high school years, there were no true organized girls sports as we know them today. Girls had “play days” and some intramurals, but that didn’t satisfy Brenda. She became involved with the boys’ tennis and bowling teams and competed well, setting the stage for her future endeavors in women’s athletics. After graduation, Brenda earned a bachelor’s degree from Southwestern College in Kansas and a master’s degree at Kansas State University. She spent two years coaching women’s basketball at Columbia Green Community College before starting an over-30-year career at Joliet Junior College in Joliet, Illinois, where she taught physical education and coached women’s basketball and softball. Brenda and her husband Jerry are now enjoying retirement together.

  • Jason Burgess, Class of 2005: During his first three years of high school, Jason participated in soccer, swimming and baseball. In his senior year, he shifted his focus to cross country, where he earned MVP honors. He qualified for and competed in the state meet, placing 13th in his class – the highest place finisher in NRW history. He then participated in indoor track his senior year, where he also excelled. Jason still holds the school record in the 3200M and he and his teammates hold the 4x800 relay record. Jason currently serves in the armed forces and is in the process of relocating back to New York, where he will work at Fort Drum.

  • Shane Frey, Class of 2005: Shane was team captain for cross country, swimming, and track and field during his time at NRW. As a varsity swimmer he competed in the fly, IM and relay events. In track he competed in the 800M, 3200M, and 800M relay. Shane was named Most Improved Player in both swimming and track and Most Valuable Player in swimming. He was Section V champion in the 100 fly event in both 2004 and 2005. He currently holds the school records in the 200 IM and 100 fly. Shane was a member of the 2004 Section V track and field champion 800M relay team. He and his teammates previously held the 800M relay school record and currently hold the 3200M school record. He was a 2004 News10NBC WHEC Scholar Athlete and received the Robert Bradbury Award. After graduation, Shane attended the United States Air Force Academy and served as an officer in the Air Force from 2019 through 2016. He currently works as a USAF civil servant and lives in Dayton, Ohio with his wife Amanda and 11-year-old twins, Jackson and Mallory.

  • Brian Hoyt, Coach: Brian began coaching boys JV basketball in the 2001-02 season, then advanced to the varsity level in the 2005-06 season, where he remained until closing out his 20-year coaching career in 2022. His 2015-16 team captured a league championship, and over his career he led his teams to two runner-up spots in Class B2 sectional play. Brian coached three 1,000-point scorers and was twice honored as Section V Class B Coach of the Year. Brian and his wife, Kathy, reside in Wolcott. They have three adult children – Justice, Danielle and Garrett – and one grandchild.

Additionally, he coached boys varsity tennis for 21 years and girls varsity tennis for 20 years. During Peter’s tenure, he coached two boys’ singles sectional champions and one boys’ doubles champion, and his 2019 team earned a sectional championship. His girls teams were Section V runners-up each year from 2014 through 2017. Peter coached four girls to Section V individual championships, including one four-time champion. Peter lives in Ontario with his wife Christine and their children Nicolena, Peter and Dylan.

He and his wife Debbie were married in 1977 and soon after moved to North Rose-Wolcott, where they still live today. All four of their children – Michelle, Paul, Amanda and James – were NRW athletes. A longtime community volunteer, Bruce coached T-ball, Little League and youth basketball and assisted girls varsity basketball coach Dave Smith in starting a basketball program for fifth through seventh grade girls. As their children grew, Bruce and Debbie joined the NRW Booster Club, where Bruce became increasingly involved over the years. He was known as the maintenance man and grill master and could fix almost anything that broke. He bent, formed, welded and installed a complete counter system for the old concession stand, installed shelving, and put in supports for the grill and fryer. Today, Bruce enjoys his nine grandchildren and supports them in sports and music activities., He has been president of the Booster Club since 2020 and is still the first to arrive at a match and the last to leave!
