Athletic Placement Process
The Athletic Placement Process (APP) is a program for evaluating students who want to participate in sports at higher or lower levels. The intent of the APP is to provide a protocol to allow students in grades 7 and 8 to move up; or for students in grades 9-12 to move down, allowing them to participate safely at an appropriate level of competition based upon physical and emotional readiness and athletic ability rather than by age and grade. The paperwork required to go through this process can be found at the bottom of this page. For more information, contact the Athletic Office or the varsity head coach of your sport program. Please plan ahead in starting the process well in advance of the season as there are several steps that need to be completed to ensure eligibility for fitness testing.
To start the process (Form B) a parent permission form must be signed and returned to the athletic office prior to the deadline for that sport season.
1. Prior to fitness testing, any APP student-athlete must be approved by the school nurse as part of the medical clearance process. Student athletes should have an up-to-date physical in their nurse's office.
2. Once approved by the school nurse for fitness testing student-athletes must pass 4 out of 5 of the test items and there are no longer “special approval waivers” from NYSED if a student athlete doesn’t qualify. They should begin training immediately if they have not yet started a training program.
3. If approved by the school nurse and the student athlete passes the APP Fitness Test, the student athlete will be given details on how to be recertified online through the Family ID recert process. If the student athlete is not approved or does not pass, they would register using Family ID for the modified team.
