Week of March 7-11:

For this part of the project, you will look through a series of websites that describe and reveal the devastation that deforestation has had on the people and environment of Haiti.

"A Desert in the Caribbean" "Alarms Sound Over Haiti's Environment" Haiti's Environment-Divine Rhymes ORE World-Bamboo
Environmental History of Haiti Archives Map & Facts  "Haiti:Forestry" "As Trees Go, Haiti becomes a Caribbean Desert"
National Public Radio Deforestation Pictures   Picture of deforestation

Week of March 14-23: Gather research and begin rough drafts of your letter to a government official of your choice.

-After reading through these sites, collect the following information to add to your letter:

1)      When did the deforestation of Haiti begin? What does the term deforestation mean?

2)      What are the trees that are cut down used for?

3)      What effects does deforestation have on the environment? You should address things like how it affects animals and pollution.

4)     Define the term erosion  and how deforestation has contributed to this process.

5)      Approximately how many trees are left in Haiti?

6)      Why does Haiti have this problem of deforestation, and the Dominican Republic not have it? (Hint-research charcoal production)

7)      How are groups such as ORE and others trying to save Haiti’s forests?

8)      What do you think the US government should do to help this problem?

When you’ve addressed these questions, write a 2-page letter to a government official about what you have learned.  To get full credit, you must include information from the previous questions.

*Remember, this letter should not just report information about deforestation, but should also reflect why and how you think the group/nation you address in your letter could help this situation.

*Refer here for advice on how to write a persuasive letter.

Week of March 28-April 1:
